  • what happens in the sessions?

Each session begins with a short introductory chat that moves into a guided meditation of around 30 minutes. There is then a short talk (10-15 mins) about a relevant aspect of the practice before a chance to chat and ask questions.

We take our meditation practice seriously but ourselves a little less so. The group is relaxed and friendly and there is lots of opportunity to ask questions and to discuss the practice.

  • How much does it cost?

There is no set charge for the sessions. This isn’t designed to make a profit and the teacher doesn’t receive any payment for offering the sessions. However, to keep going we need to cover the expenses of running the sessions (the hiring of the hall, costs of the website etc), so you are invited to make a donation based on your own individual means – traditionally called dana – after each session to contribute to the cost of the rent.  A suggested donation would be £10 for someone working, but that’s a suggestion and not a rule.  You can offer less than that if you are financially struggling and more if you have the capacity to be more generous to keep the group going.

  • I have a busy mind. Can I learn to meditate?

We all have busy minds. It’s one of the great things about being human!

Meditation isn’t about learning to squash your thoughts but learning how to work with them.

  • do i have to sit on the floor?

No.  There are chairs available you can use to sit on. Some people like to sit on the floor using meditation cushions or benches and they are welcome to do so. However we don’t provide cushions/benches so please bring your own if you want to sit on the floor. We can also advise on the best sitting equipment for you if you want to start sitting on the floor based on your body type and flexibility levels.

The Larkin Room has a hard floor so if you are using a meditation bench you might want to bring a zabuton or a thick blanket to cushion your knees.

  • do i have to believe in anything to practice with you?

No. Whatever your faith (or lack thereof) meditation can benefit your life.

  • Can I just turn up or do I have to pre-book?

You don’t need to prebook a place but it’s a good idea to email us before coming along for the first time just to check we are sitting that week (occasionally if there is another booking at the venue or at certain holiday times we might miss a week).

Please arrive a few minutes before 7.30pm to get settled before the class begins.

  • what should i wear?

There certainly isn’t a dresscode.  But whether you are sitting on the floor or in a chair you want to be comfortable. So wear something fairly loose and warm or cool enough for the season.

  • can i book a one-to-one?

This might be possible in some circumstances. If you’re interested in this, please get in touch.
